The system, called OWL (Optical Watch Line), was developed and manufactured by Magna BSP and uses a pair of high-performance thermal imaging and CCD cameras to achieve a high probability of detection while maintaining a low false-alarm rate (FAR). According to Chief Executive Officer Haim Siboni, it was chosen by the IDF due to its low FAR, which averages one a day.
The system operates in all weather conditions and can detect a target as small as one pixel. The unique stereoscopic vision feature of OWL and its sophisticated software allows accurate detection of objects and the precise estimation of their size and distance.
OWL continuously processes the determined scanning zone and looks for changes in the 3-D visualisation of the scenery. When a change in the scenery is detected, it sounds an alarm and transmits the information to the military command centre from which it is operated.
