DRDO (Defense research and Development organization) has awarded contract for the development of Rustom MALE (Medium-altitude, long-endurance aircraft) UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Project to state sector companies HAL and BHEL , while Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T), Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Co. Ltd were the other contenders.
Rustom’s basic design is derived from the NAL light canard research aircraft (LCRA).Rustom which has a wingspan of 20 metres and weighs 1,800 kg will have endurance of 250 km .First flight of Rustom-I took place on 16-11-2009 at the Taneja Aerospace Air Field near Hosur. The demonstration resulted as the prototype crashing to the ground.Due to misjudgment of altitude of the flight.
